Born in Hawthorne, Queensland in 1959, Lewis grew up in a rugby league family. His father, Kevin Lewis, played for the Wynnum-Manly club. Wally began playing rugby league as a child, and it soon became apparent that he had a natural talent for the sport. He played for the Wynnum-Manly club as a junior, and later joined the Fortitude Valley Diehards.

Lewis made his first-grade debut for the Diehards in 1978, at the age of 19. He quickly established himself as a star player and was soon signed by the Brisbane Broncos, who were set to enter the newly-formed NSWRL competition in 1988. Lewis was named captain of the Broncos, and he led them to their first premiership in 1992.

He played for Queensland in the State of Origin series from 1980 to 1991, and was named man of the match in numerous games.
