Garth Wright, born on September 9, 1963, in East London, made a significant impact on South African rugby. He played as a scrumhalf and developed his skills at Muir College before making his mark in domestic rugby. Wright represented Eastern Province and later Transvaal in South African domestic competitions. His performances at the provincial level were instrumental in earning him national selection.
Wright made his Springbok debut on May 24, 1986, at Loftus Versfeld against the New Zealand Cavaliers. His performance in the third test showcased his tactical awareness and sharp decision-making.
