A QUEENSLAND RUGBY LEAGUE LEGEND – HERB STEINOHRT

Herb Steinohrt, born in Pittsworth, Queensland in 1897, is a revered name in Queensland RL history. He came from a large family of German descent and developed a love for sport early in life. At 19, he made the pivotal switch to rugby league, a decision that would shape his legacy. He began his career riding 39 kilometers on horseback to play for Warra, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the game.

Rise Through the Toowoomba Rugby League

Steinohrt’s rugby journey took a significant turn when he moved to Toowoomba. Invited to join the Toowoomba Clydesdales in the TRL, he juggled working in a local sawmill with playing top-tier rugby league. Moreover, his versatility on the field stood out. Initially playing as a centre or winger, he later excelled as a front row forward and could comfortably slot into second-row or lock. Consequently, he became a cornerstone of the Clydesdales’ forward pack.

Queensland Representative Career

In 1925, at the age of 26, Steinohrt began an unbroken run representing Queensland in rugby league. From 1925 to 1933, he played in 30 consecutive interstate matches—an astonishing feat. Furthermore, he captained the Maroons to series victories over New South Wales in 1931 and 1932. In addition to his leadership, Steinohrt’s tactical intelligence and calm demeanor set him apart. He was widely respected as a smart player who never lost his temper.

Australia Test Career and Kangaroo Tours

Herb Steinohrt earned his first cap for the Australian national team in 1928 at age 29. Subsequently, he played in all three Tests of the 1928, 1929–30, and 1932 series against Great Britain. During the 1929–30 Kangaroo tour, he featured in three Tests and 18 other matches. In 1932, he captained Australia in all three home Tests against the English. As a result of his achievements, Steinohrt is celebrated among Australian rugby league’s 100 greatest players.

Legacy and Honours

Herb Steinohrt’s contribution to Queensland RL was immense. His tactical prowess, versatility, and sportsmanship left a lasting impact. Consequently, he was named in the Queensland Rugby League’s Team of the Century. In his honour, the Valleys Roosters’ home ground in Toowoomba is named Herb Steinohrt Oval.
