Gibson made his debut for the Ireland national rugby team in 1964 against South Africa. He went on to play 69 times for Ireland. Scoring nine tries and captaining the team on several occasions. He was known for his versatility, playing at both centre and fullback throughout his career.

Equalling fellow Irishman Willie John McBride’s record. However, back and hamstring problems meant that Gibson was unable to compete for a test place.
