John Brass Eastern Suburbs
John Brass was born on October 7, 1946, and quickly rose to prominence in the world of rugby. His early career in Rugby Union was distinguished and successful. He debuted for New South Wales in 1966 at just 19 years old. Nine days later, he played against the touring British Lions. Subsequently, he earned his first cap for the Wallabies in the infamous second Test of the series in Brisbane.
Brass’s rugby union journey included an unforgettable tour of Britain, Ireland, and France during 1966–67. He played in all five Tests and 32 of 36 matches. Moreover, he formed a formidable centre pairing with Dick Marks and scored tries at Murrayfield and Twickenham. These experiences laid a strong foundation for what would be a storied dual-code career.
In 1969, John Brass made a high-profile switch to rugby league. He signed a record-breaking contract with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters. This transition marked the beginning of a new chapter. In the 1974 Grand Final, he calmly slotted two goals. In the following year’s decider, he scored two tries, helping seal a dominant victory for the Roosters.
Consequently, Brass became an integral part of one of the most successful eras in Roosters history. His performance in big games showcased his class, composure, and clutch abilities. In addition to domestic success, he captained Australia in the 1975 Rugby League World Cup series, including a crucial win over New Zealand.
