Josefa Levula, fondly known as “The Flying Fijian,” was an iconic figure in the world of Fiji Rugby. His unorthodox high knee action and exceptionally long strides set him apart from his peers. In 1951, Levula showcased his extraordinary talent at Buckhurst Park,. Where over 3000 fans gathered to witness the final between Suva and the Northern District. Levula scored four tries. Ending Suva’s decade-long dominance and cementing his status as a rising star in Fiji Rugby. His prowess on the field quickly earned him a spot on the Fiji national rugby union team. Which later adopted his nickname “The Flying Fijian” as their own.
International Success and Rugby Union Achievements
Levula’s international career took off when he was selected for the Fiji tour of New Zealand. He made an unforgettable debut at fly-half,. Scoring a brace of tries against the Māori All Blacks and leading Fiji to a 21–14 victory. Consequently, he was honored as New Zealand Rugby’s ‘Player of the Year,’. A testament to his remarkable skill and impact on the game. Moreover, in August 1952, Levula played on the wing when Fiji made history by defeating Australia. Transition to Rugby League and Later Years
In addition to his rugby union achievements. Josefa Levula also made a significant impact in rugby league. In 1961, he defied the Fiji Rugby Union and moved to England, joining the Rochdale Hornets. Subsequently, he was joined by fellow Fijians Orisi Dawai, Voate Drui, and Laitia Ravouvou. Levula’s transition to rugby league was successful, and in 1964, he transferred to Bradford Northern, where he continued to showcase his exceptional athletic abilities. Despite the challenges he faced, Levula’s dedication to the sport never wavered. In recognition of his contributions to rugby, he was inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
