Louis Magee a London Irish Rugby Legend

Louis Magee was christened Aloysius Mary Magee. He was born on the 1st of May 1874 in Dublin, Ireland. Magee played club rugby in Ireland for Bective Rangers. Yet, it was his association with the London Irish rugby club that played a major part in the growth of the London-based team. He was also an exceptional international rugby international. And as part of the British Isles team in their 1896 tour of South Africa.

London Irish Rugby and Ireland Rugby International

Magee played half-back. He was capped a total of 27 times for Ireland. This included ten as captain. He also won two Championships. In addition, he led Ireland to a Triple Crown win in the 1899 Home Nations Championship. Magee was one of the outstanding half-backs of world rugby prior to 1914. And is credited as being a driving force in turning Ireland into a highly respected rugby nation.

Magee was an exceptional sportsman. And came from a sporting family. Joseph Magee. his eldest brother was also an international rugby international for Ireland,. In addition, another brother James played cricket for Ireland. Also, his brother-in-law, Tommy Little, played rugby for Ireland between 1898 and 1901.

A major influence on the success of London Irish RFC

Magee played the majority of his rugby for the Bective Rangers club. Along with both his brothers. However, in 1898, while in London. Magee was approached by the newly formed club, London Irish, to play for the first team. He accepted the invitation. And his presence in the team helped recruit other countrymen to join the exile club. He is seen as a major influence on the success of the club.
