While the game is relatively new to New York the USA has an interesting history in Rugby League. In 1953, a group of American football players led by Mike Dimitro left the USA to tour Australia to play Rugby League. None of the athletes had ever previously played the game. Yet, they were not only able to compete against some of the best players in the world, but also shocked the local teams with some stunning victories.

On the 6th game on tour, the USA All Stars Rugby League team played Newcastle on Saturday the 13th June 1953. The official crowd at the Sports Ground was 14,160. The following report is taken from the Newcastle Morning Herald, courtesy of the Book ‘No Helmets Required’.

The American All Stars gave the Newcastle players lessons in handling, tackling and determination. The Americans won because of the over confidence of Newcastle.

Scenting a win, and under the guidance of their coach Latchem Robinson, the American forwards delved in and pounded Newcastle into errors of which the All Stars were quick to take advantage. At least five of the Americans – Harold Han, who scored two tries, winger Bob Buckley, Gary Kerkorian who scored 11 of America’s points from a try and four goals. Sol Nauma and Al Abajian – have the natural ability to win a place in any State Rugby League team.

American All Stars defeat Newcastle

Gary Kerkorian kicked five goals and scored a try for the Americans. America scored first when Kerkorian kicked a penalty from the 25 yard line. Newcastle replied with a try by centre lead converted by Darcy Russell. The Americans led again when Kerkorian ran through a group of Newcastle forwards and scored a try wide out which he also converted. Newcastle led 8-7 with a try by left winger Shanks. Russell missed the goal but then added a penalty goal.

America took the lead again when Harold Han scored under the posts. Kerkorian kicked his third goal from three attempts. Newcastle won the scrums 17-10 in the first half and referee A. Oxford awarded America four penalties to Newcastle’s two. At half time it was America 12, Newcastle 10.

Playing with the strong wind America hemmed Newcastle in right from the start of the second half. The American forwards were doing particularly well and 20 minutes after the resumption America went further ahead as Han scored his second try under the posts after a tricky run. Kerkorian converted. America 17, Newcastle 10.

In the closing stages of the second half, the Americans stood right up on top of the Newcastle team and maintained their lead. Kerkorian kicked another penalty goal. The American All Stars downed Newcastle 19-10.
