The great Australian Rugby League player Arthur Beetson, played for the Dolphins in 1964. And he was part of the legendary 1965 Brisbane Rugby League Premiership-winning side.

After successful stints playing for the Balmain Tigers, Easter Suburbs Roosters and Parramatta Eels. He returned to the Dolphins in 1981 and became player-coach.

Having enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned over two decades. Beetson at 36 year old helped Redcliffe Dolphins reach the Grand Final where they met Brisbane Souths. Arte didn’t get the fairytale ending to his career. Souths won in the last minute and on their last tackle. Mick Reardon scored the crucial try after good work by Mal Meninga and Chris Phelan.

The Brisbane Rugby League Final between Souths and Redcliffe on the 13th of September 1981. It was a highly anticipated match that showcased the fierce competition and skill level of two of the top teams in the league.

Souths went into the First Grade as underdogs after losing 21 -10 to Redcliffe in the major semi-final. The match kicked off with both teams displaying great energy and determination. Redcliffe started the game strongly, dominating possession and showcasing their attacking prowess.

Souths, however, gradually found their rhythm and started to assert themselves in the match. Their forward pack began to make inroads into Redcliffe’s defensive line. Providing a platform for their talented backline to exploit. Half-back Brad Sully score an opportunist try. And Mal Meninga kicked the goal. In reply, Ian Pearce kicked a goal for Redcliffe Dolphins.

The remainder of the first half was characterized by intense physicality and tactical battles between the two teams. Both Souths and Redcliffe had their opportunities. Then in the final minutes of the first half the Magpies Full Back Ken Spencer cooly slotted a drop goal. At the break Souths led 6 points to 2.

Drama in the final minute left despair for Redcliffe Dolphins Rugby League

The second half witnessed a surge in intensity as both teams realized the significance of this match. Souths came out firing, showcasing their attacking flair and determination to secure the victory. Ian Pearce scored for Redcliffe and added two further conversions. Souths replied through the trusty kicking of Mal Meninga.
So, Souths were down 9-8 against Redcliffe with a minute to go. Redcliffe were captain-coached by a 36-year-old Artie Beetson, trying to get his beloved Dolphins a premiership in his final year before hanging up his boots. Then, Souths 21-year-old centre Mal Meninga created the space for Mick Reardon to score of spectacular try in the corner. Meninga added the conversion. The final whistle blew with Souths emerging as the victors, winning the Brisbane Rugby League Final with a scoreline of 12-10.

Artie can be seen slumped in the in-goal area. He’d given his all, but knew it was all over – both his playing career and his dream of a fairy tale premiership victory to finish. He’d left an indelible mark on the Rugby League community. His remarkable career, characterized by passion, skill, and sportsmanship, became an inspiration for aspiring players and a source of pride for Redcliffe and Queensland. Post-game, Beetson’s teammates, opponents, and fans paid tribute to his exceptional achievements, underscoring his immense contribution to the sport.
