On May 13, 1961, rugby league fans witnessed a momentous clash as St Helens Rugby League team triumphed over their arch-rivals, Wigan. With a final score of 12 points to 6. The Rugby League Challenge Cup final. Held at the iconic Wembley Stadium. Was a spectacle of skill, passion, and determination from both sides.

1961 St Helens v Wigan First Half

The match kicked off amidst a buzz of anticipation from the tens of thousands of passionate rugby league supporters in attendance. Wigan started the game with great intensity. Seeking to impose their dominance early on. However, St Helens’ formidable defense held firm. Denying Wigan any scoring opportunities. The first half was marked by a display of tactical brilliance from both teams, with their respective defences refusing to yield. Although Fred Griffiths opened the scoring for Wigan through a penalty. It was the great Alex Murphy who crossed for a sensational try to put St Helens ahead. Rhodes then added a penalty for the Saints. This made it 5 points to 2 at half-time.

Rugby League Final St Helens 1961

The second half commenced with renewed determination from both teams. As they sought to seize the initiative and secure victory. Griffiths once again kicked a penalty. But, St Helens made the breakthrough when, Tom van Vollenhoven, displayed incredible speed and agility. Assisted by Centre Ken Large. He sliced through Wigan’s defensive line to score a breathtaking try. The Wigan supporters were left stunned by the brilliance of van Vollenhoven’s individual effort.

St Helens’ confidence surged after the opening try, and they continued to apply pressure on Wigan. They scored further points from the boot of full-back Austin Rhodes. The conversion followed by a penalty. Griffiths had the final word for Wigan with a further penalty. But St Helens captain Vince Karalius lifted the 1961 Challenge Cup. Saints’ great Second Row Forward Dick Huddart was awarded the Man of the Match award.
