An Introduction to Traditional England Rugby Shirt Red Rose
It is our inspiration on the Traditional England Rugby Shirt. In 1913 England Rugby team won the Grand Slam for the first time. Remarkably, they only conceded one score during the entire tournament and that became a goal scored by Ireland. This still remains a record for any Grand Slam-winning team.
Two great England teams have achieved back-to-back Grand Slams in the Championship. Firstly in 1923 a certain WJA ‘Dave’ Davies, who not only won against the French in Paris but also celebrated with his honeymoon. England was formidable, led by the outstanding Wavell Wakefield a No.8 of pace and power. Having defeated Wales, Ireland and Scotland – England defeated a stubborn French team by 12-3 and who else but Davies’s finished the game with a finely struck drop goal.
The following year 1924 Wavell Wakefield the most outstanding Forward in the tournament not only led the team to successive Grand Slams, but this was the third in four years having won in 1921. With Wakefield pulling the strings it was Carston Catcheside benefitting scoring in all four games.

Sixty-seven years later in 1991 England had assembled an exciting team. Classy three quarters a formidable pack of Forwards and a clever half-back pairing. It started well for England defeating Wales 25-6 in the dragons’ den in Cardiff. Then defeated Scotland comfortably 21-12 and the Ireland 16-7. Then it was France and ‘Le Crunch’. Philippe Saint-Andre scored an amazing try, but Simon Hodgkinson’s boot and Rory Underwood’s finishing held out the determined French by 21-19.
By 1992 this England team had reached its peak and they were simply irresistible. They disposed of Scotland 25-7, then silenced Ireland 38-9 before demolishing France 31-13 in Paris. The Wales team were no match for this rampant England team who won their back-to-back Grand Slam in style by 24-0. They scored 14 tries in four games and Full back Jonathan Webb scored 63-points.
Both these great England Rugby teams wore the famous Red Rose proudly on the chest of their jerseys. Over the years the English rugby shirt has rarely changed since the team’s inception back in 1871. This stylish rugger combines Red and dark Navy colours often used in the support of England.
