An Introduction to Vintage England Rugby Shirt Classic Style
The Vintage England Rugby Shirt Classic Style inspired by the great England Rugby teams. The national side’s famous Red Rose emblem chosen prior to an English team. It was sent to Edinburgh to play a Scottish side in 1871.
The white shirt matched to one worn at the famous Rugby School. There is an allegation on the school that the game first played when William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran with it.
Various Red Roses wore over the year. But Alfred Wright has credit for standardising the use of the rose. That use up until 1920 had undergone many variations. There was no central source for the embroiled badge. Instead of many of the players themselves had their own versions created. The design that Wright specified is thought to have been used with little alteration until the late 1990s.
Wright became an employee as a clerk with the RFU in 1920. Later he became the England rugby archivist and remained in his position for 60 years.
Alf created much of the groundwork for the rugby collection. He collected many of the items included in the World Rugby Museum. Those signed by such inspirational individuals from the world of Rugby Union. People such as George Rowland Hill, Adrian Stoop, William Wavell Wakefield and Bill Ramsey carefully and meticulously stored Alfred Wright.
