Western Suburbs 1963 T-Shirt Black Grand Final

The year 1963 witnessed an exhilarating showdown in the New South Wales Rugby League Grand Final. Between two powerhouse teams. St George and Western Suburbs. This grand final encounter showcased the immense skill, passion, and determination that defined rugby league in the 1960s. Let us delve into the thrilling contest that unfolded between these two formidable teams.

Key Players of the Western Suburbs 1963

West’s team included some of the greatest ever players. Stars like Scrum Half, Arthurs Summons. Kangaroo winger Peter Dimond. Also, outstanding fullback Don Parish. In addition, they fielded an outstanding forward pack. Such as Captain Nel O’Shea, Noel Kelly, and John Hayes. Also, Jim Cody and Dennis Meaney.

The controversy surrounding the Referee in the Grand Final

The game was controversial due to the dubious decisions made by referee Darcy Lawler. It was suggested these were influenced by Lawler’s association with some gambling syndicates.

From the opening whistle, the 1963 decider was a grueling affair. The wet SCG pitch quickly became a quagmire. And players became unrecognisable as the ground turned into a grey, thick mudheap. Wests through Gil McDougall cleverly targeted the talented Saints centre three-quarter Reg Gasnier. As a result, Gasnier’s brilliance was rarely seen.
Just before half time. Wests had a try disallowed. With 15 minutes to go and the score favouring Saints 5–3. Johnny King scored a controversial match winning try. Both decisions fuelled the debate about Lawler’s impartiality on the day. Lawler, who awarded St George the penalties 18–7, retired after the match.

The Gladiators – Western Suburbs 1963 v St George

The match is also celebrated in Australian rugby league history. As a result of John O’Gready’s enduring photo of rival captains Provan and Summons in a congratulatory mud-caked embrace at the game’s end. The award-winning photo became known as “The Gladiators”. And since it was first published has been appreciated by rugby league fans as capturing the essence of the game. Wherein a little man can fairly compete against the bigger man. And where sporting respect and camaraderie follow epic struggle. Since 1982 a bronze replica of the Provan and Summons embrace has adorned the various incarnations of the Australian rugby league premiership trophy.
This memorable clash stands as a testament to the rich history and enduring appeal of the sport. It serves as a reminder of the passion and excitement that rugby league has generated throughout the years. The 1963 grand final will forever be etched in the annals of rugby league as a true classic, remembered for its high-quality rugby and the enduring spirit of competition.
