Jim Sullivan, who was born on August 15, 1909, in Cardiff, Wales. Is one of the most iconic figures in the history of rugby league. A gifted player, he had an illustrious career that spanned more than two decades. During which he played for Wales, Wigan, and Great Britain.
Sullivan began his rugby league career in 1926. When he signed for Cardiff. However, it was at Wigan where he made his name. Playing for the club for 21 seasons between 1929 and 1950. During his time at Wigan. He won every major honor in the sport. Including the Challenge Cup. Also, the Championship. In addition, the Lancashire Cup. He also scored an incredible 4,883 points. A record that stood for over 60 years.
Sullivan was also an accomplished international player. Representing Wales on 26 occasions between 1929 and 1946. During his international career. He scored an impressive 172 points. Which included 11 tries. Also, 63 goals. In addition, 3 drop goals. He also captained Wales in several matches. Finally, leading the team to victory over England in 1935 and 1937.
In addition to his success at club and international level. Sullivan also played for Great Britain on 25 occasions. Scoring 211 points,. Which included 7 tries, 86 goals, and 6 drop goals. He was part of the Great Britain team that won the Ashes series against Australia in 1932 and 1933. And he also played a key role in the team’s victories over New Zealand in 1935 and 1946.
After retiring from playing in 1950. Sullivan turned his hand to coaching. And he enjoyed success in this role as well. He coached Wigan to the Challenge Cup final in 1951 and 1952. Also, he coached Wales between 1954 and 1958. Leading the team to victory over France in the 1956 Five Nations Championship.
Jim Sullivan was a true legend of rugby league, a player and coach whose achievements will never be forgotten. His record of 4,883 points for Wigan stood for over 60 years,.
