Ian McGeechan is a Scottish rugby legend who has left an indelible mark on the sport. Both as a player and a coach. He is regarded as one of the most successful and respected figures in rugby. Also, his achievements in the game are truly remarkable.
Born in Leeds, England. In 1946. McGeechan grew up in Scotland and began his rugby career as a player for Headingley in the late 1960s. He soon made a name for himself as a skilled fly-half and was soon playing for Scotland at international level. Throughout his career. He played 32 times for Scotland. Scoring 4 tries and amassing 89 points.
Despite his success on the pitch. McGeechan is perhaps best known for his coaching career. He began coaching in the early 1980s. And it was not long before he was appointed head coach of the Scotland national team. Under his guidance. Scotland enjoyed one of their most successful periods. Winning the Five Nations Championship Grand Slam in 1990.
McGeechan’s success with Scotland led to him being appointed head coach of the British and Irish Lions. One of the most prestigious coaching roles in rugby. He led the Lions on four separate tours. In 1989, 1993, 1997, and 2009. Winning the series twice (in 1989 and 1997). And coming agonizingly close on several other occasions. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential coaches in the history of the Lions.
In addition to his work with Scotland and the Lions. McGeechan has also coached at club level. Most notably with the English side Wasps. During his time with the club, he led them to two Premiership titles. Also, they won the Heineken Cup in 2004 and 2007.
