The history of the Six Nations

The Six Nations Rugby Championship. Also known as the Guinness Six Nations. Is an annual international rugby union competition featuring the national teams of England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and Wales. The tournament originated in 1883 as the Home Nations Championship, which featured only the teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

1910 France joined to create the Five Nations

In 1910. France joined the tournament. Which was then renamed the Five Nations Championship. Italy joined the competition in 2000. And the tournament became known as the Six Nations Championship.

Six Nations Rugby

Throughout its history. The Six Nations Championship has been one of the most prestigious rugby competitions in the world. And has produced many memorable moments and legendary players. England and Wales have won the tournament the most times. With each team securing the title on 40 occasions as of the 2021 edition of the competition.

Staged in February & March

The Six Nations Championship is held annually from February to March, with each team playing the other five teams once over the course of five weekends. The team with the most points at the end of the tournament is crowned the Six Nations champions, while the team that finishes in last place is relegated to the second-tier Rugby Europe Championship. In addition to the Six Nations Championship, there is also a women’s Six Nations Championship and an under-20 Six Nations Championship, which features the national teams of the same six countries. These tournaments are held concurrently with the men’s Six Nations Championship, and have also grown in popularity and prestige over the years.
