Leading the Lions in two tests in Australia in 1966. He set up position for Uzzell’s drop goal and kicked a penalty to draw with Australia in 1966. He played 21 times for Wales. Including the 1964–65 Triple Crown. And was captain three times in 1967.
In addition, he made six appearances for the Great Britain rugby league team. Also, he played in every match of the 1975 World Cup for the Wales national rugby league team.

Furthermore, he made over 400 appearances for the Red Devils between 1967 and 1979. Breaking multiple records during his time at The Willows. His tally of 493 points during the 1972/73 season was the most by a Salford player in a single campaign. And his 1,241 goals across a 12-year stint at the club still stands as a record. Also, he captained Salford in their 1969 Challenge Cup Final against Castleford Tigers.
He gained recognition after his playing career. Firstly, in the 1986 New Year Honours, Watkins was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). Secondly, in 2000 he was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame. Finally, on the 27th of October 2022, he was inducted into the Rugby League Hall of Fame.
